This is freaking sad

Two weeks ago our cat Chico had a limp on one of his front paws. We noticed it by morning, but by bedtime he was fine again. Walking on it regularly and jumping around. Roughhousing.
We were relieved.

I guess last night he got into a scrap with something out there bigger than him (be it bobcat, coyote, javelina, what have you) because he was limping again today on the other front paw.
Bob took a look at him and had nothing but bad news.
Seems like he got himself bit by something and into quite a tumble.
One of his front legs was bit and bleeding, the other that he couldn't walk on was probably shattered inside. He had all kinds of puncture wounds along his leg. He was bleeding.
Bob said if he got attacked by a coyote or a raccoon or anything really, he could have gotten rabies too.
I started crying while Bob loaded him into the cat carrier to go get put down. They left about a half hour ago.
I'll miss him.
The kids will miss him.
We love you Chico!

Jessy, please go get those cats vaccinated for rabies. They play with your children!

Our other guys are all up on their shots. Don't worry! We don't let rabies just come in the house.

Oh that stinks! Sorry Jessey.

That is SO sad- it's so hard to say goodbye to a pet, especially so suddenly. And it's got to be very difficult to explain it to the kids, when you're hurting, too. We'll be thinking about you guys.

Unfortunately, Bob has a policy of "don't tell until they ask" and even then we don't tell them "Chico is gone because he got attacked by a wild animal outside and got hurt very bad so we had to have him put to sleep."
No. That would be way too much information.
We'll tell them Chico went to live with Mary and Gondo down by the river, with Sawyer.
Don't ask who Mary and Gondo are, it's a long story.
Or ask. Whatever! :)
I had trouble sleeping last night because I was sad. I know he's better off without the pain he was feeling, but still...

Athena still says we have two cats, even though Hector ran away in September when Hermione moved in. She doesn't talk about Murphy at all, who I put down in June.

She must have hit some sort of mental threshold between the two. I'm sure Elizabeth will ask...

Oh no! Hector ran away??
We have had a BUNCH of pet losses since moving out to the country here.
First our dog ran away, then our cat Pumpkin ran away, then we had a dog Rocky who had to be re-homed and a cat who also had to be given away, then Sawyer who got hit by a car, then we got Chico and now he's gone...
this is in three years. We have bad luck with pets I think.

Hector is the third cat we've lost since we got married. I'm NOT happy about it.

I am so sorry to read about your cat.

Yeah, um, be careful about the "down by the river" thing. My uncle used to tell my cousin that the dogs "went to Canada". Then, we actually *went* on vacation to Canada, and my cousin flipped out, thinking we were never going to be coming back. My uncle had to say that only dogs stayed in Canada, and people always came back. So just watch out the next time you guys want to take a trip to the river.

RIP Chico. Loosing pets is terrible. I still cry when I think about our bunny rabbit. :(
That is a funny Canada story though. Its amazing how kids think...
